About Texas Humane Heroes
“Texas Humane Heroes is a No Kill, private, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization with dog and cat adoption centers in Leander (Greater Austin Metropolitan area) and Killeen, Texas. Established in 1979, Texas Humane Heroes enhances the lives of pets and people through adoption, availability of our low-cost spay/neuter and vaccinations as well as family-friendly community events.
We are 100% funded by donations, grants, and modest fees for services. Texas Humane Heroes does not receive any local, state, or federal government funding.“

Volunteer Opportunities
- Individual Volunteers: Help socialize the adoptable animals, learn about animal wellness, and take a burden off the Texas Humane Heroes staff by assisting with day-to-day care.
- Group Volunteers: Texas Humane Heroes can accommodate groups of up to 20 people with at least two weeks’ notice. All participants must be at least 16 years of age. Groups under this age like scout troops can help with projects at home, like making blankets and toys or hosting a donation drive.
- Foster: Give a dog a temporary loving home while it waits to get adopted.
Volunteer Requirements
- Pay a one-time volunteer registration fee of $25, which includes your volunteer t-shirt.
- Solo volunteers must be 16 years of age. Ages 12–15 must come with a registered volunteer 21+. Must be age 12 or older to volunteer.
- Complete a volunteer orientation and dog handling class.
